Go with the Flow, Etc.

So many times we try to make things happen, to do it our way, to force things to be the way we think they should be.

The truth is, there may be one or more possibilities out there that are better than anything we could ever imagine.

For example, the first few years of our marriage, Greg and I lived in rented apartments. We wanted a house of our own, but we didn't know if that would even be possible anytime soon.

Then, one day, when Greg and I were traveling, we took a wrong turn and went down a street where we'd never been before. Not far down that road, we saw a house that we really liked. It was a Cape Cod in a rather run-down condition, but we decided that with some work, it could become the house of our dreams.

Before

We were, however, concerned that we couldn't afford it, but after some creative financing, the pretty diamond-in-the-rough, fixer-upper house became ours.

After

We really enjoyed fixing it up and having it the way we wanted it to be. We lived there happily for several years.*

We sold that house, and we bought two other houses to renovate. We sold those, and we're currently living in an old (1901) house that we're also renovating.

That "wrong turn" that we took those many years ago turned out to be a right turn for us!

One day, I went shopping for a package of ink pens, but when I looked for them, I couldn't find the ones I'd been using. I even went to several stores, looking for that particular brand of pen. When I still couldn't locate the pens, I finally resigned myself to buy another brand.

When I got home, I tried out one of the new pens, and to my great surprise, it was actually better than the type that I'd been using for years! The new one was smooth and didn't skip at all. I couldn't believe that I'd become so attached to the old pens, that in reality, they weren't doing a very good job!

Also, just recently, I lost a small, natural stone that I was wearing as a pendant. I wore it a lot, and I miss it, but I feel confident that I'll find another one just as nice, if not better than that one.

Rather than trying to make things happen, just go with flow,** and notice how much smoother everything goes. We just need to have a positive attitude, to do the best we can, and to know with God's help that everything will turn out for the best.

Also, at the same time, I think we need to keep in mind that it's good to have nice things in our lives, but instead of counting on material things to keep us happy, it's far more important to cultivate good qualities in ourselves, like kindness, compassion, love (for ourselves, as well as others), (and being positive!), etc. So, "things" should just be sidelines.

Something kind we can do is to support small business, especially right now.

When Greg and I can't find things we need from small businesses locally or from small businesses when we're traveling, we seek out small businesses online, like the ones on eBay and Etsy, which are reputable companies. You can find some nice things for reasonable prices from good online vendors.

After buying something from these online sellers, it can make us feel good to get something we needed and wanted and at the same time, to know that we've helped someone else.

Many of these vendors are so appreciative that they send little hand-written notes that say something like, "Thank you for supporting my small business," "Thank you! xoxo, Karen," and also-

One person even sent me "Bible" passages, and offered to pray for anyone who needed prayers.

We are all one, and we need to love and support each other now, as never before.

Memorial Day-In Honor of Our Heroes

*Although we loved our pretty house, we gradually found out that it was actually haunted! For more information, please see my book, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind," in which I describe in words and pictures our encounters with the supernatural, there, as well as other places. Just click the widget above which will take you to my book which is on Amazon Kindle. Also, you might enjoy my memoir, "Down Memory Lane." For more information, and to buy this memoir which is in both paperback and Kindle, please see the widget above.

**This flow doesn't just pertain to things, it also can include people, careers, as well as infinite other possibilities for one's life. (For example, I just happened to be on an outing one day when I ran into a man who told me about a job opening, and because of that chance meeting, I ended up getting my first teaching job!)

A Week with No Computer!

Welcome!

I'm glad to be back blogging! I'm almost a week late with my monthly "The Art of Positive Living" blog post because for the first time (And hopefully the last!) our computer crashed due to a power surge, but that's okay because good came from it.

"Every problem has a gift for you in its hands."
-Richard Bach

The good things that came from our computer concern are-

-Greg and I needed a new computer anyway since our other one was six years old! Our new one works really well; it's a great improvement over our old one, so much faster, etc. (Sometimes circumstances force you to change, to get you out of your old rut.)

-Going through any mini-crisis like we did with our computer makes you appreciate people that can help you overcome adversity like computer experts Gary and Lynn who put us back on track. A huge thanks to them!

-I got to connect with some people on the phone rather than just sending them emails.

-Greg and I had more time to do some other things like...

having a picnic in our favorite park on a beautiful day in June, which is my favorite month.

-Also, during this time, since I couldn't find any store-bought shorts that I could use, I just made my own by turning some old jeans that I already had into shorts. However, these are shorts that I'll just wear around the house since I'm certainly not an accomplished seamstress. (This is an understatement!)

I learned the shorts trick from Greg since he's made his own shorts from jeans several times. He's a very thrifty and resourceful guy!

Actually, everyone we know, everyone we encounter, has something valuable to teach us if we just pay attention.

-During this time, since I couldn't use "Microsoft Word," I wrote some chapters of  a new book I started using paper and a pen, so that way I didn't lose any momentum on writing my book which I plan to publish in late summer.

This book is not paranormal like my last book, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind." Instead, it's more along the lines of this blog, "The Art of Positive Living." I'll let you know more about it during the next couple of months or so.

My blog post for next month will be delayed for about a week because Greg and I will be involved with a special event in early July. So, I plan to publish my next "The Art of Positive Living" blog post on Monday, July 9 which happens to be the date of my mother's birthday.

May you enjoy the beauty of this special time of year!

The Christmas Spirit

Do you have the Christmas spirit?

After last week, Greg and I can say that indeed we do have the spirit of Christmas!

In historic Franklin, Tennessee, we attended "Dickens of a Christmas" which is a festival where Christmas comes alive around the time of author Charles Dickens.

Costumed characters abounded on the streets of Franklin-

A little girl is talking to Scrooge, the Dickens character who finally gets the Christmas spirit in "A Christmas Carol."

Another character looked like a statue!

Some of the vendors even got into the act...

as did some of the visiting dogs-

There was Christmas music-

of different types-

There was plenty of yummy food to try...

and coffee to help keep warm on a cold day,

although some found other ways to stay warm-

After the festival, it was on to Nashville, to visit the Hermitage Hotel which is in a word-

elegant, especially at Christmas!

Across the street is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center which presented-

the Nashville Ballet's "Nashville's Nutcracker,"

in which we are proud to say that our little niece performed, and did a great job!

Afterwards, we visited with family at their house which was beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Hear ye! Hear ye! Have a very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!

If you like the paranormal, check out my other blog, "Spirit Photographs."

Also, I have a book which might make a nice Christmas gift for someone that enjoys the paranormal,, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind" which is available now, either in paperback or as a kindle download.

Positive thought: Always remember the spirit of Christmas which is love.

Fall Festival Time in Tennessee!

Welcome!

"My Take on Fall"

"Tell stories around the fire...
Jump in leaves
Wrap your hands around a hot mug
Eat a caramel apple
Be outdoors...
Roast marshmallows
Carve a pumpkin
Go on a hayride...
Wear a scarf

Go to a fall festival in Tennessee!

This is such a beautiful time of year in Tennessee, and the weather is warm with a slight breeze. It's just a perfect time to attend one of the many fall festivals in Tennessee during the month of October.

"Autumn paints in colors that summer has never seen."
- From www.picturescafe.com

Here are some of the best fall festivals in Tennessee that I have either personally attended or that I know of-

-Unicoi Apple Festival, Erwin

Although I've never attended this festival, I know it's very popular. A friend of mine from Erwin told me that it's fantastic, and that she thought I'd really enjoy the arts and crafts, the wonderful food including apple dishes, and the entertainment. Greg and I decided that we're finally going next year, so we're putting it on our 2018 calendar!

FYI:
Dates: Oct. 6 & 7, 2017
www.unicoicounty.org

-National Storytelling Festival, Jonesborough

We have been to historic Jonesborough many times, but we have never been to this festival either. The stories are told by professional storytellers, and I have heard that the event is quite good and well-attended. This is its 45th year, so you know they're doing something right! You can see examples of the Storytelling Festival on Youtube.

FYI:
Dates: Oct. 6-8, 2017
www.storytellingcenter.net

-Robert A. Tino Smoky Mountain Homcoming, Sevierville

For those of you who like art, you will love this one! Greg and I once stopped by Robert A. Tino's art gallery on our way to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Robert Tino is an excellent landscape artist who paints scenes of the beautiful Smoky Mountains in acrylics and in watercolor. Besides the artist's work, this festival also features Southern food, mountain music, crafts, and activities for children.

FYI:
Dates: Oct. 6-8, 2017
www.RobertATinoSmokyMountainHomecoming.com

-National Banana Pudding Festival, Centerville

Greg and I have attended this festival which we really enjoyed, especially the banana pudding! (It's flavor brings back fond memories of back home, and of the wonderful banana pudding Mama used to make.) The pudding made at this festival should be good since this is a competition to determine the best banana pudding in our nation! Besides puddin,' there are crafts, entertainment, and children's activities.

Bananas on Display at the National Banana Pudding Festival in Centerville, Tennessee

F.Y.I:
Dates: Oct. 7 & 8, 2017
www.bananapuddingfest.org

-Heritage Days, Rogersville

Not only have Greg and I attended this festival in the past, but we have also had our own booth in the arts and crafts area where we did portraits of people. It was a great festival, a lot of fun, and we did really well there. Besides the arts and crafts, they have a lot of other things going on-traditional Appalachian Mountain music, dancers, food, storytelling, pioneer demonstrations, antique cars and quilts, etc.!

FYI:
Dates: Oct. 13-15, 2017
www.rogersvilleheritage.org

-Webb Art and Craft Show, Bell Buckle

We have been to Bell Buckle many times since it's such a unique, quaint little town (with a population of only 500!). According to "Thrill List" which rates the best small town to visit in each state, Bell Buckle is the best small town to visit in Tennessee! We have to agree that it's a fantastic place to visit for its charming little shops and tasty food. I've written blog posts about it several times, including the last one that I wrote on 8/21/16, "A Bell Buckle Celebration."

Greg and Me at a Festival in Bell Buckle

A good time to visit Bell Buckle might be this month for the Webb Art & Craft Show where there will be over 100 artists with their pottery, plants, jewelry, paintings, photography, and many other delightful things.

FYI:
Dates: Oct. 21 & 22, 2017
www.bellbucklechamber.com

-Henry Horton Spirits of the Past, Chapel Hill

Lastly, no October celebration would be complete without doing something kinda scary, so how about going on a paranormal Halloween investigation at Henry Horton State Park! We have been to this nice park before, but not during October, and certainly not on a paranormal investigation. A friend emailed me about this event, and Greg and I are thinking about going. It would make a great "Spirit Photographs" blog post!

FYI:
Date: Oct. 28, 2017
http://tnstateparks.com/events/details/#/?event=henry-horton-spirits-of-the-past

So, the different above-mentioned festivals and events offer something for just about everyone, and hopefully you'll find something here that you might enjoy. Have fun!

Also, especially since Halloween is coming soon, might I recommend my book on the paranormal, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind" which is available now, either in paperback or as a kindle download,

Last Positive Blog Post of 2014

Welcome!

Not only is this my last blog post of 2014, but it's also my last post until Sunday, February 8, 2015 because I have a lot of plans for the new year, and I'm going to have to slow down a bit to work in everything.  For now, I'm planning to have my regular posts around once a month with occasional mini blog post updates in between the regular ones whenever something interesting happens.

Some of my projects are, working more on my art, photography, and writing.  My writing includes two books on which I'm currently working, one paranormal and the other one on abuse (with a positive slant, of course!).  I'm currently thinking about some other project ideas, as well.  I even have plans for a website.

Since this is the end of the old year, I always like to look back on the year and evaluate it in terms of what I've learned and what good things happened during that time.

I have learned some valuable lessons in 2014:

-I learned to never give up on your dreams.

-Live life on your own terms, not according to what other people expect of you.

-Cultivate true, non-judgmental friends that are appreciative of who you really are.

I'm thankful for so much that has happened for Greg and me this year.  We have been truly blessed, as evidenced in my thankful journal that is overflowing with all the things I'm thankful for each and every day.  We're looking forward to even more blessings in the new year.

-One big thing for which I'm thankful is our changing ninety percent of the food we eat to organic.  It's making a big difference in our lives.

-I'm thankful for all of you: the readers of my blogs, those who have taken the time to email me with your kind comments, those who have been supportive of my book, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind," and those who have bought my coal jewelry, art work, and photographs.

-And, the list goes on!

I'm looking forward to many more exciting adventures in the new year, and I'm wishing for you the same.

"Cheers to the new year and another chance for us to get it right."
-Oprah Winfrey

A Toast to 2015!  (With sparkling organic grape juice, of course!)

October in Tennessee

Welcome!

I hope you're having a wonderful October wherever you are.  It's been great here in Tennessee.  We went through a rainy spell a couple of weeks ago, but the last few days have been partly cloudy to sunny with relatively warm temperatures.  I even wore shorts today, as the high was around 80 degrees.  In a few days we even plan on visiting a park to enjoy all the colors since the weather is so nice.

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
-Lucy Maud Montgomery

"October's the month
When the smallest breeze
Gives us a shower
Of autumn leaves.
Bonfires and pumpkins
Leaves sailing down-
October is red
And golden and brown."
-Author Unknown

"October sunshine bathed the park with such a melting light that it had the dimmed impressive look of a landscape by an old master."
-Elizabeth Enright

"October is crisp days and cool nights, a time to curl up around the dancing flames and sink into a good book."-

"The rising moon illuminates the world of the owl, a hushed world of shadows and stars.  Leaves rustle in the wind, a distant hoot is heard, and the owl glides on silent wings of half-light.  Full moon or new, the owl finds her way on an airy path through the night."

Love of Photography

Welcome!

Today, I'd like to let you know what I've been really involved with (more than usual) the last couple of months-photography.

As many of you are probably aware, photography has always been a big part of my life.  I've always enjoyed taking pictures, even as a child.  My earliest recollection of taking a picture was at a family get-together on my mother's side of the family when I took a group photo around the age of eight.  (Later, however, after we'd gotten our pictures back from being developed, I was a little upset when I realized that I wasn't in a group photo! I bet that any of you that take a lot of photos have had that happen to you occasionally.)

I come by this love of photography from my father who was an avid photographer when I was little (before he became very involved with art).  I loved being his little model as I posed for his pictures many of which I have, and cherish to this day.

"Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still."
-Dorothea Lange

Greg and I must have 80 photo albums depicting the events of our lives.  A couple of years ago, I went through those many albums and found all of the paranormal ones and put many of them in my first book, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind."

That brings me to the reason why I've been so busy with photography lately-I now have over 40 photos ( Greg has some, as well) on a stock photo website, iStockPhoto by Getty Images.  It's taken a lot of work, and I had to jump through hoops to be accepted, but I'm glad to be a part of it for it's a great website.  It's been a slow process getting pictures on there as every photo is carefully checked for quality, etc.  To be discovered by the public, you have to have a lot of pictures on there, and Greg and I are working toward that goal every week.

If you'd like to take a look at the photos we have on there as of now, just click the link below.  Hope you enjoy them!

Be True to Yourself!

Welcome!

This blog post was inspired by a book I'm currently reading, "You are a Medium" by Sherrie Dillard.   Although I'm not particularly interested in being a medium or in communicating with the other side, I am interested in knowing more about the spirit world since I have been given the gift of being able to take paranormal photos which I've documented in my first book, "Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind."

However, "You are a Medium" is not just about the spirit world.  It tells you how to live a better life here on Earth, as well.  For instance, I really like the chapter "Embrace Your Freedom: Break Free from Conformity" in which Sherrie says to be true to yourself, to express who you truly are.  To quote from her book, she says, "You are not meant to follow the dictates of others.  A unique and individual expression of the divine, you fulfill your purpose by shining bright in your beauty."

I have tried being like everyone else, to fit in, but that has not worked for me.  I'm much happier when I listen to my inner guidance and just try to be myself.

"Every time you don't follow your inner guidance, you feel a loss of energy, loss of power, a sense of spiritual deadness."
-Shakti Gawain

Carol Tuttle, the author of several books and creator of "Dressing Your Truth" is a big advocate of being true to yourself.  Her teachings have helped me immensely.  In fact, I wrote an earlier (2/15/14) blog post entitled, "Dressing Your Truth Has Had a Positive Impact on My Life."

Another person I admire is Zak Bagans, the creator and host of Travel Channel's hit show, "Ghost Adventures."  This is a unique man who has been true to himself despite having a controversial show about ghosts, etc.  In fact, as a child, he was even bullied by others, presumably because he was different.  Wonder what the bullies think of this successful man now?

"Never be bullied into silence.  Never allow yourself to be made a victim.  Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself."
-Harvey Fierstein

Elvis Presley was another one of-a-kind person, and people embraced that.  Other people have tried to copy him (impersonators, etc.), but, of course, none are as good as the original.

Be unique!  Be proud of who you are!

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else."
-Judy Garland

People, happily, are just like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike.  That's what makes the world so interesting.

As I was writing this post, a song kept running through my mind, "I've Gotta Be Me," which I haven't heard or thought of in a while.  After a little research, I found out it was a song sung by Sammy Davis, Jr. which I found on YouTube.  It's a beautiful song that you might want to check out for inspiration.

The Golden Rule, Revisited

Welcome!

In my May 5, 2012 blog post, I wrote about The Golden Rule.  I think that it's very important, especially in today's society, so I thought I'd tackle the subject again.

The reason for my writing this is because of something that came up in my life recently.  I had left a message on a man's answering machine a few weeks ago that I was going to give him a free book (Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind) as a gift, since he'd been so helpful with part of my new book.  All he had to do was to return my call and give me his address so I could send it to him.  Days, weeks went by, and he still hadn't returned my call.  I couldn't understand why, as he seemed to be a nice guy.  I was starting to get a complex, and I imagined all sorts of reasons why he didn't call.  Thankfully, a couple of days ago, he did call me, apologizing for not having called, because he'd written my phone number on a piece of paper and had lost it, but finally had found it.  He said he couldn't wait to read my book!  We need to give people the benefit of the doubt.

It's amazing how often we jump to the wrong negative conclusions.  I guess it's in our negative programming, and we just have to overcome it.

Anyway, the above incident made me think about the way we treat each other in light of The Golden Rule.  Wikipedia defines The Golden Rule as, "One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself."  It also goes on to say,..."a person living by this rule treats all people with consideration, not just members of his or her in-group."

I recently found a great web site "Zen Habits" that has a helpful post,"18 Practical Tips for Living the Golden Rule."  It states that when you treat others with kindness, you'll be happier, and you'll make the people around you happier, too.  A couple of the practical tips dealing with stopping criticism and controlling others were especially good.

Most religions deal with treating people with kindness and respect:
"A man should wander about treating all creatures as he himself would be treated."
-Jainism, Sutrakritanga

Some examples treating people with kindness and respect would include, to mention a few are:
-Promptly replying to emails, phone calls, etc., especially if you're in business!  (Unless there's a real problem like the man I mentioned above)
-Thanking people for any kindness they have shown you
-Complimenting people on things they've done or have
-Helping others

Some specific instances of kindness and respect from other people that have come into my life that make me feel good to remember are:
-One of my former school classmates is always friendly and makes you feel good to be around her, because she focuses on you and makes you feel good about yourself.  She has charm, because someone who is charming always makes the other person feel important.
-I recently ordered something handmade online, and the woman who made the item for me, went out of her way to make sure I was happy.  She responded quickly to a question I had.  (Bet she has a lot of repeat customers!)
-A businessman who sent Greg and me a free $30.00 gift certificate to his restaurant for our wedding anniversary, because something I ordered for Greg hadn't come on time
-People who compliment me on things related to me personally

These people have got it right!

No matter how positive we try to be, sometimes negativity creeps in.  We have to be ever-vigilant.

I was reading a few days ago about how powerful our thoughts can be.  If we could all just try to be more positive and kind, think how the world could be transformed, one positive thought at a time!

Heavenly Messages

Welcome!

We are not alone.  We are being counseled every day, if we just pay attention.  The signs are everywhere.

A few days ago, I was trying to decide on a good topic for a blog post, when, as I was coming out of a grocery store, I happened to look down, and there on the asphalt was the unmistakable shape of a heart.  I thought, of course, why didn't I think of it before?  This was something that I used every day that I needed to share with my readers, signs from above, heavenly messages.

I have the heart as my symbol, so that when a heart shows up in my life, it reminds me that all is well, that we are being watched over, and that we are blessed.  Now, I often see hearts everywhere I go-on buildings, signs, clothing, bags, etc.  I got the idea of having my personal symbol from one of Rhonda Byrne's wonderful books which have made such a positive difference in my life.

Other than your personal symbol, you can also receive other heavenly messages by being aware of the numbers that often show up in your life.  These numbers are explained in Doreen Virtue's helpful book, Angel Numbers.

Those images that you see in clouds (or anywhere else!) might hold special significance for you.

In the interesting weekly magazine, Woman's World, there is a page entitled "My Guardian Angel," where Doreen Virtue comments on angel stories that readers have sent in.  These stories are about messages that people have received from their departed loved ones.

The paranormal photos that are in my book, Photographic Encounters of the Spirit Kind, are from spirits that are trying to communicate with the living.
