"A Positive Mini-Blog Post"

This is a view of Abingdon, Virginia from the porch of  The Martha Washington Inn & Spa.

The picture above was taken a couple of years ago, a little later in the year than it is right now. Our leaves are just barely changing color as I write this.

Fall is on the way, though. It officially starts on Monday, September 22 this year.

It's best that we look for the good and the positive, although, at times, it may seem like an impossible task.

Let this be a day of remembrance for all of those who have passed on, especially those whose whose lives have been cut short in senseless tragedies.

Here are some words that will hopefully inspire us to move on with our lives no matter what happens in our country, or comes our way-

~"You cannot help the world by focusing on negative things. As you focus on the negative events of the world, you not only add to them, but you bring more negative things into your own life at the same time." -Rhonda Byrne

~"You cannot harm another person with your negative thoughts. You can only harm you." -Rhonda Byrne

~"This is a spiritual battle that we are in...good versus evil...." -Julie Green

For prayers and healing- www.jgminternational.org

~"Love and gratitude can part seas, move mountains, and create miracles." -Rhonda Byrne

Let's all hug, and be thankful for, our loved ones.

I'll have another special blog post later this month, (as well as my usual one next month, which will be around the first Saturday in October) with more positive thoughts and ideas, and some information about some projects that I'm working on that I'd like to share with you.

Here's one of those things that I'm still working on-my new book about Southern Appalachia-

The following will not be in my new book, but it could have been-

This type of quilt was called a crazy quilt.

This particular quilt was made during the winter by some of my ancestors. It was finished in 1897. The ladies that made this quilt were sisters, and they enjoyed "visiting with each other" as they worked. They made a quilt for each sister. They had the quilt on a frame, and they'd roll it up as they worked on it.

There are several initials on the quilt, and one set of initials was for a relative who was a Confederate soldier.

"A Simply Positive Life!"

It's really not that hard to be a positive person when you know some simple tried-and-true ideas that can help us on the road to positivity.

Here is a random list of some of the things that I've learned along the way that have helped me become more positive-

~This is a good one that is especially good in today's world- Make it a habit to read, watch, and listen to positive things rather than negative ones.

You might even want to try this experiment: For a couple of hours, just listen to, watch, and read only negative things, and notice how you feel. Then, for two more hours, listen to, watch, and read only positive things, and see how you feel after that. Did you notice any difference? At the end of each of the two hours, write down how you felt. Which of the two-hour periods do you prefer?

~"...fill your life with good thoughts (thoughts of what you want), along with good feelings, because then you will have total control of the outside world."- Rhonda Byrne

~Read good books by Rhonda Byrne, Norman Vincent Peale, and others. An Internet search for books about being positive will result in many good books about being positive for children, as well as for adults.

~We need to work on being healthier, like getting plenty of sleep, eating good, nutritious food, taking deep breaths, etc. I often like to search the Internet for good health ideas. When we're healthier, we generally tend to feel happier and more positive.

~It's important to be kind to others; what we put out there comes back to us!

~Adopt a pet, whether it's a dog, a cat, or a goldfish, etc., since it can make a positive difference in their lives, as well as ours. A psychic once told me that our cats Kallie and Mitzi were so happy and thankful that we adopted them together.

Pets can be wonderful companions.

~We need to practice being spiritual, which can mean that we are religious, and/or we do meditation, or that we enjoy being out in nature, or we ;might do some type of art, etc. in a mindful way. Doing these things can help us to feel more positive.

~Connect with nature often, whether it's going out into the yard, or going to a park or the beach, or just looking out the window, or looking at pictures of landscapes, etc.

~Celebrate! There are plenty of holidays and other special occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, births, etc. to enjoy.

Kallie, celebrating! Let's make every day a celebration!

I've mentioned a few ideas to help us get and stay on track in our journey for a simply positive life.
What other positive ideas do you have?

Wishing you a positive, happy life, and...

"Positively Inspirational"

Sometimes we feel like we need to have some positive inspiration to help us navigate today's world, so here are some positive quotes and ideas to help us on our journey through life.

~"We've known for a long time...that time spent outside lifts your spirits." -Laura Koniver, MD

Let's connect with nature. If we can't be outside, we can look out the window as Greg often does when he can't go out and do gardening or other yardwork. Even looking at pictures of nature-landscapes, etc. can make us feel a lot better.

Nature can be so inspirational!

~"Join me on a journey into the infinite diversity of our world. Let us explore the beauty of variety in others and ourselves and enjoy the harmonies of every sound, color, and feeling this journey holds in store for us." -Malte Marten, musician

~"I think if the whole world (saw) this video, the world would be a better place." -A viewer's comment after seeing one of Malte Marten's handpan music videos

Pets can be such a wonderful inspiration. We can learn lessons from them. For example-

Our Kallie was a beautiful example of pure, unconditional love.

~"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." -Anatole France

In my Sunday, August 4, 2024 blog post, "Living Positively," I wrote about a man's pet bird, a white parrot, that he had with him in Sevierville, Tennessee, that he was showing off to some other visitors there.

I had taken several pictures of this pretty parrot, and I had wanted to put one of the pictures in that blog post, but I couldn't, because all of the pictures on my photo card had completely disappeared! I even went to several photo stores, but no one could help me.

I never gave up hope, however, and I finally asked a woman who sometimes comes by to work with me on our computer if she could help me recover the missing photos. I told her if she could do so, it would be a miracle.

It turned out that she recovered nearly all of my missing photos! I told her that she was a miracle-worker! People like her are a real inspiration!

And here is one of my miracle photos-

~"Expect a miracle! Miracles happen every day." -Josie Grouse

An extremely important presidential, etc. election in the United States is coming up this Tuesday, November 5, 2024. For the sake of our country and for the sake of the world, please take the time to vote if you haven't already, not just for the next president, but for the others who are running for different other offices, as well.

Greg and I voted about a week ago, and before we voted, we asked ourselves this important question- "Are we better off now than we were four years ago?" The answer to that, for us, was simple.

~"America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea." From "America the Beautiful" by Katharine Lee Bates

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, positive, inspirational, and blessed Thanksgiving!

Optimistic About the Future

In these tumultuous times, we need to be, more than ever, optimistic about the future.

We need to be and stay positive; we need to look at what's good in life.

When I look around where I live, I see entrepreneurs opening businesses, like the new milkshake and baked goods shop in Abingdon, Virginia, named Shaked!

Love the Logo!

Love the Ice Cream, Too!

FYI-Shaked!, 284 W. Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia

Also in Abingdon, a new convenience store, Royal Farms, is now being built.

A couple of days ago, Greg and I visited Warriors Path State Park in Kingsport, Tennessee. While there, we saw the newly renovated marina with a new restaurant and upgraded boat docks. Lots of other people were also there. They seemed happy, enjoying the warm weather.

Greg on the Deck of the Marina

While there, we took a stroll around the park,

"And what is so rare as a day in June?"-James Russell Lowell

and we were lucky enough to see this deer-

that didn't seem to mind that people were around.

Last month, for the first time, we visited Grayson Highlands State Park, about an hour's drive from our house in Southwest Virginia.

The altitude is so high there that most of the leaves were not out yet, but it was still very picturesque-

Black bears and even wild ponies reside there.

The world is so beautiful. We just need to take time and enjoy it, by ourselves and/or with the people we love.

Also, when you look for the good, you are bound to find it.

I'm optimistic about people because, for the most part, they know what's really going on.

I was recently in a beauty shop, and the people there were discussing current events, and they seemed really savvy about things.

"...know the truth, and the truth will set you free."-John 8:32

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time."-Abraham Lincoln

Many people are attending church or watching services on television or on the Internet, and they know the power of prayer.

I just like to always remember that love overcomes hate, light overcomes darkness, and that positive is more powerful than negative.

We are truly in a spiritual battle of good versus evil for our souls and for the soul of our nation and even for the soul of the world, but we are winning.

Good always wins!

Thankfully, we have a bright future ahead of us. We just need to keep the faith!

The Good Old Days

I'm so glad you are here for my first blog post on this first Saturday of the month. I plan to have every "The Art of Positive Living" post on the first Saturday of every month from now on. I will post my blog, "Spirit Photographs," on the third Saturday of each month.

I've been thinking a lot about the subject of my post for today, something that is close to my heart, the good old days, since my newly revised book, "Down Memory Lane,"* is about the good old days!

Although we perhaps romanticize days in the past, there is much we can learn from the positive aspects of those days.

And, here are many of them-

~People were very patriotic.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag...."

~People read books, had hobbies, and played board games.

~School students were generally well-behaved. Those few who weren't, were disciplined. The worst thing that I can remember when I went to school was that one boy had to be sent home because his hair was too long in the back.

~Most people graduated from high school, and many went on to higher education.

~People dressed nicely. Here's an excerpt from a chapter in my book that Greg wrote - "Personal appearance was important. Most people looked neat and well-groomed. Shirt tails were tucked in and shoes were shined....Most people looked fit and trim."

~People were honest. If they found a missing wallet, they'd return it. Also, they kept their word. If they said they were going to do something, they would do it. If they found out they couldn't do it, they'd let it be known.

"Do what you know to be right." -David Icke

~Religion was important to most people.

~In fact, two of my high school graduation gifts were two small gold crosses that two different people gave me.

~People were generally complimentary to each other. They tried to make people feel good about themselves. Things like this mean a lot to others.

~People helped their friends, relatives, and neighbors when needed.

~One day, Greg and I were at a garage, and a woman who was a receptionist there was so nice. She was pleasant and very efficient. She seemed happy, and she made you feel better by just being around her.

~Most television shows and movies were G-rated. They were good, decent. quality shows. The characters set a good example. The good guys won. There was a moral to every story.

~People were industrious, hard-working, and ambitious. Most kept the same job or profession their whole lives. My grandfather was a doctor who truly cared about other people, and he charged his patients very little.

~The man was the breadwinner, and his wife stayed home and kept house and cared for their children.

~Families had fun times together, like going on picnics with made-from-scratch dishes like homemade potato salad or fresh green beans.

~Most leaders were honest and respected.

~Music was harmonious.

~In the early days, all food was organic.

How does life today compare to the good old days?

Thankfully, we generally stack up pretty well overall, but, of course, there is plenty of room for improvement. Any areas in which we are lacking can be turned around. Anywhere that we're falling short can be remedied with some positive planning and some work, but it can be done, individually and/or by people working together.

If we do that, then we can then truly say, "The good ol' days are being made right now." -From Blue Bell Ice Cream commercial

Coincidentally, I just recently found out about a really neat festival, the "Good Old Days" street festival in Pacific Grove, California this weekend. There will be a parade, a pie-eating contest, and much more! It sounds like fun!

We Are Powerful!

We can affect our environment for good or for bad because we are more powerful than we realize.

Not long ago, one night around midnight, Greg said that he noticed a vehicle across the street from where we live, acting strangely. The vehicle's horn blew off and on for about a minute, and its lights went off and on at the same time. And the really strange thing is that no one was near there at that time.

Something similar like that happened to our own car about four years ago. It was also late at night.

The only explanation Greg could come up with was that four years ago, and also, just recently, he had gotten acupuncture treatments for his back. Apparently, the needles had caused an energy release which affected the electrical systems of the nearby vehicles. That's pretty powerful energy!

Also, to further show how we can affect things around us, Greg told me that he had heard about a woman who had moved many miles away from the house in which she had lived, and that somehow during the move, her beloved cat had accidentally gotten left behind. She missed her cat so much that she started praying about it daily, while she looked at its picture.

Miraculously, some days later, her cat showed up at her new house! This just illustrates again how powerful our minds, our energy fields really are!

This power can be used for good or for bad. It can be positive or negative. (If we are deliberately using our power for the bad, we are building up some very bad karma for ourselves!)

Instead of  dwelling on what is, we need to focus on a positive outcome. Just imagine how wonderful it would be, to transform our lives, one positive thought at a time!

If we'd just start imagining the Earth as a place of love, peace, and harmony, our powerful thoughts could positively transform our world and the people in it. Sounds like a plan!

Our usual restaurant in Wytheville, Virginia was closed for renovation, so we talked with several people, including those at the welcome center, and we decided to try the recommended Papa Taso's Diner for lunch, and we weren't disappointed. It's a Greek restaurant with seafood and more. It's in an old building that used to be a service station. Check it out online for yourself!

New Beginnings!

Living a positive life in today's world may be a challenge, but it can be done. We only need to change ourselves for the better, and then, miraculously, everything else will change for the better.

Spring is a perfect time to start anew, new beginnings for ourselves, for others, and for the world.

"Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over."-Guy Finley

First of all, we need to get into the right mindset. To do this, we need to make time for ourselves and do what makes us feel better.*

This might include, but is not limited to, meditation (This is what I need to do more of every day. I'm working on it!), praying, listening to uplifting music (I love the video of Louis Armstrong, beautifully singing "What a Wonderful World."), exercise (so many things from which to choose-walking, dancing, bike riding, etc.), reading, traveling, just being in nature, watching a comedy show ("Laughter is the best medicine."), etc.

Also, Greg and I eat healthy, organic food most of the time. We drink filtered water throughout the day. We like to get fresh air and some sunshine as often as possible. Also, we try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. Something I've finally learned to do is to slow down and take periodic rest breaks throughout my busy days.

"Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live."- Jim Rohn

Is there something you would really love to do, but you never took the time to do it? This is a great question to ask ourselves. What is your heart's desire? If you had all of the time and money in the world, what would you do? Is it a place you'd like to visit or an activity you'd like to do? What is it?

"Live your dream and take risks. Life is happening now."-Paulo Coelho

No man is an island. We need to be around, to hang out with positive people, and to confide in someone we can trust.

We need to make a difference, like writing emails, calling people, going to meetings, etc. if we see changes that need to be made in our world.

Just a few days ago, a sweet-looking Amish woman came up to me while I was shopping in a store, and she handed me an inspirational CD. She said she wanted me to have it. I thought that that was such a nice thing for her to do.

Every night, before I go to sleep, I visualize our world with a golden-white light all around it, and I think, "Light overcomes the darkness." (This idea is from www.matthewbooks.com.) I like to believe that this exercise is somehow making our planet a better place in which to live.

Lessons Learned, a Fresh Start

As I looked back on my life in 2021, I wondered what lessons I had learned so I could have a fresh start for the new year in 2022.

To begin with, I learned to think for myself, not to take someone else's word for something that may or may not be true, but to search for the truth that is best for me. And, I learned to stand up for what I believe is right.

I learned a lesson from someone I know who thought she needed a big change in her life- she moved to another state by herself, and she seems to be very happy that she made that move. So, if there's something you think might make you feel happier, and you think it is the right thing to do, go for it! Remember to live your dream!

Just recently, I decided I needed another white poinsettia for decorating, so I went back to the store to get one. However, when I got there, there were no more flowers in the area where I'd gotten the other one. I started thinking that one might be in the clearance area, so I went there, and sure enough, there was a lone flower that had been tossed on a shelf by itself. I couldn't believe my good fortune! I felt like it was waiting there just for me.

White Poinsettia

I learned that sometimes you're given a second chance on things, and if you are supposed to have it, it will be yours.

After we moved to our new house, I decided that I'd really like to have a pie safe for our kitchen. I went to several local stores, antique barns, etc. looking for one, and I even had several people looking, as well, but to no avail. On a treasure map (also known as a vision board) I'd made, I even had a picture of a pie safe, and I looked at that picture every day, wishing for a pie safe. However, I found out that they had become scarce, that there were not many around anymore.

One day, I decided to look online for the pie safe on a site that featured local antiques and furniture. Instead of a pie safe, I saw a pretty cabinet that looked similar to our built-in cabinets in our kitchen. It then dawned on me that something like this cabinet would be much better in our kitchen than a pie safe would have been.

Newly-painted Cabinet

We went to see the advertised cabinet, and we decided it was perfect for our kitchen. It was a diamond in the rough; it needed some work so we got it at a great price. Greg sanded and painted it, and now we really like it!

The pie safe would not have looked right there at all. Also, pie safes in good condition are very  expensive now.

Although a pie safe was on my treasure map, and almost all of the things I have on there have manifested, the pie safe was not one of them thanks to a quote I have on the map, "All this or something better now manifests for me in totally satisfying and harmonious ways with good to all concerned." I'm very thankful for that quote. Sometimes what you think you want is not in your best interest.

It's good to be more spiritual, to look for the good in everyone, to sincerely compliment others, and to make them feel better about themselves. This includes friends, family, and even strangers.

(It's not up to us to hate, disrespect, demean and punish others that we decide are unacceptable. People that do that are setting themselves up for some really bad karma!)

However, it's good to either drop or limit your time with people who are not good for your well-being. We don't need to hate these people, but we do need to take care of ourselves, and to pray for them.

Greg and I have decided that we are only going to allow people into our lives that are kind, supportive, and respectful. Life is too short to do otherwise. We are now going to a beautician who cuts hair well, and is really nice, too. We decided to drop a seamstress who, although she does a good job, seems to have a lot of anger.

Something positive that we are now doing is leaving little papers different places that we visit. These papers have helpful messages on them like website addresses, positive quotes, etc. We do this anonymously, and we hope it's helping others.

Here's a good idea for the new year from Pal's-

Rhonda Byrne, the author of the best selling book, "The Secret," has an important idea for everyone for a better life, to only think of what you want, not what you don't want. Sounds good to me!

Positive thought- We need to look back and try to learn lessons from our lives, and to turn anything we see as negative into something that is positive!

Grounding- Positively Life-changing!

And happy fall y'all! (Wednesday, September 22, 2021!)

I feel like today's blog post is one of my most important ones ever, and I hope you learn something helpful. Enjoy!

Not long ago, I was talking with relatives, and they were all telling about doing yardwork and gardening, and I told them that I didn't do that type of thing, that Greg handled all of that. I said that I was more of an indoor girl than an outdoor girl (except for an occasional walk in the park or for a picnic now and then).

Little did I know that in a few short weeks, I would change my tune after I discovered- grounding (earthing)!*

While searching online one day, I accidentally found out about the Schumann resonance which is 7.83 Hz, the frequency of Mother Earth. When we get in touch with that frequency, we can hopefully be healed. It is a good EMF energy that can be healing physically, mentally, and emotionally!

The concept was so interesting that I did further research, and I found a website, Intuition-Physician, that seemed to explain it all simply and convincingly. Dr. Laura Koniver's website has a ton of information about grounding, and I am still learning a lot when I have the time to study it.

With my newfound knowledge, I started grounding right away. It's easy to begin since all you have to do is to put your bare feet on the bare ground...

or in the grass to get the healing energy of the earth.

You can make grounding a very special time...

like eating barefoot at a table for one or two. (Greg grounds regularly now, too.)

You can also ground on...

concrete,

or while...

gardening. (Yes, I even help Greg some in the garden now. It's a win-win situation for both of us!)

You can engage in different activities like-

taking pictures while grounding.

Want some proof of what grounding can do?

In the photo above, the flowers in the foreground are planted in the earth, and they are vibrant and full of beautiful blooms. However, the flowers in the background are planted in a plastic container and are not touching the ground. They are not doing as well as the ones in the foreground.

More proof of the importance of grounding- Grounding is supposed to heal inflammation which is something many of us have. I have an inflammatory autoimmune condition for which I have had to take a medicine with many side effects for a couple of years. Since I've been grounding, however. my inflammation levels have come down, so much so that I should be off of my medicine soon! Also, I'm now sleeping a lot better now!

All of this grounding in the grass, etc. in the summer is pretty simple, but what about grounding during the other seasons? Are you sensitive to EMF's? How do you shield from harmful EMF's? How do you safely keep bugs away while grounding?

For answers to these questions, and to learn a lot more, check out Dr. Laura Koniver's website, www.intuition-physician.com and get her book, "The Earth Prescription." Bet you'll be glad you did!

Please support small business!

Pet feature:

For indoor grounding, we bought a grounding mat from Dr. Koniver's website.

Grounding mats are not just for people. Pets can use them, too. Indoor pets need indoor grounding since they don't get to touch the earth like outdoor ones do.

Mitzi loves the new grounding mat...

and so does Kallie!

You can actually feel the energy coming from this mat!

In my opinion, if everyone just grounded, the world and the people in it would be in a lot better shape!

Is grounding a missing secret?

*Disclaimer: Just because Greg and I have had good results with grounding doesn't mean it will necessarily work for or be right for everyone.

Special note: Happy birthday to my brother, Nick, on September 6!

Positive thought: "Radiate positivity!" (From a car sticker) You might even attract more positive things into your life as you send out the positive vibes you feel from being grounded!

Resolutions for a New Year, a New You!

Welcome!

Since I was a young girl, I've made resolutions for self-improvement on New Year's Day, to help start the new year off right. I like to think that making those resolutions has helped propel me in the right direction. This year was no different. I made a few resolutions that mainly continue the ones I made last year.

In addition, I'm certainly in agreement with author Rhonda Byrne who has a resolution for the new year to be positive. In fact, being positive is her only resolution every year, because if you're truly positive, everything else should fall nicely into place.

Being positive is my main resolution, but I feel that I need other goals to aim me in the right direction. For example, for my business, I have goals I want to accomplish by a certain date. One of those goals is to publish another book no later than August 1 of this year. (I'll keep you posted on that one!)

Resolutions don't have to be made only on New Year's Day. In fact, I just added another resolution a few days ago, and that was to simplify my life. I was over a week late with this blog post this time, because I've just been trying to accomplish too much. I'm now trying to step back and to evaluate my life and to decide to do what's really important to me, and to just let the rest go.

It is never too late to make a resolution. If you've yet to make yours, or if you'd like to add another, what would it be?

Good luck with your resolutions, and may this be your best year yet!
