Positively Frightening Experiences

 

Twice, during the past few months, we have had two very rare (thankfully!) frightening experiences!

During the first incident, which was on a cold night in January, two men from the sheriff's department came to our door. One of the men said that while in pursuit of a fugitive, they had to drive across our property, and they hoped that they hadn't damaged our yard. (We discovered later that they hadn't done any damage since the ground was so frozen.)

He went on to say that they had gotten one fugitive, but they were still looking for another one. He told us not to worry, though, since the escapee was more like a jack rabbit than a lion. (That was good to know!)

Thankfully, that incident turned out great since they did eventually catch the other man.

Then, more recently, another night, we heard several police sirens on the main road that goes in front of our house. About the same time, we suddenly saw a helicopter hovering overhead with its search lights flashing around our property, as well as our neighbor's. We wondered what on earth was going on! All of that was quite unnerving.

However, one thing that made us feel much better, more secure, was that a police car was parked in our neighbor's large driveway.

Finally, a couple of hours later, another police car, with lights flashing and sirens going, zoomed past our house toward another town. Then, the helicopter which had been hovering over and near our house, and the police car stationed next door, both left. Apparently, thankfully, it was all over.

Later, our neighbor told us that he had gotten footage on his surveillance camera of a couple in his garden. He later learned that they had stolen a vehicle which they had abandoned when the police had started pursuing them.

Because of the good work of the police, the couple was captured. 

Thankfully, our frightening experiences turned out positively!

We really appreciate those brave, heroic men and women who are protecting us citizens from harm. Thanks so much for your service!

Mothers Are Special

The traditional Mother's Day flower is the pink carnation to honor mothers who are living, and a white carnation represents mothers who have passed away. (I can still remember going to church on Mother's Day when I was little, all dressed up in my Sunday best including my hat and white gloves, and a pretty little corsage with a pink flower.)

A gift of flowers for Mother's Day can be any colorful bouquet of flowers, including spring flowers like daffodils which represent joy and happiness.

Great Eatin' in East Tennessee

Hey, y'all!

I just wanted to fill you in on a few great places to eat that Greg and I have found the past few weeks in good ol' East Tennessee.

Seriously, though, two of the restaurants are in Johnson City and one is in Elizabethton.

The first one is a new restaurant in Johnson City, called "Tupelo Honey Cafe."

My cousin Bruce and I celebrated our February birthdays there, along with Greg, of course, and some other family members.

I love that Tupelo Honey has several items that are gluten-free and organic.

I had delicious organic veggies.

The other restaurant in Johnson is not new, but it was to us.  It's called "Freiberg's German Restaurant," which has authentic German cuisine.

The food was superb.  If you don't believe me, just look at Greg's "before" and "after" plate!

The final restaurant I'd like to share with you is called "City Market" in Elizabethton.

Since this was a cool spring day, I really enjoyed the wonderful beef stew with corn bread.

Greg and I ate there with some of the (family) members of what we call our "Monthly Lunch Club."

Hard to decide where to eat with all these choices?  Why not try them all, just as we did!

A Trip to Fabulous Savannah

The past couple of days, Greg and I went on a trip down South, to fabulous Savannah, Georgia to attend the wedding a family member.  It had been a while since we had been to Savannah, and we had a wonderful time.

We spent the night in a charming historic Victorian inn, Collat House on Forsyth Park which is known for its antiques and decor.

After breakfast, we went across the street to visit picturesque Forsyth Park.

A little later, Greg and I joined relatives for a tasty Southern meal around noon in downtown Savannah.

Afterwards, we had time to walk around and further explore this wonderful city.

By then, it was time for the beautiful outdoor wedding which took place on one of the several squares in Savannah.

After the wedding, the lucky couple left for a honeymoon in Greece.

An elegant reception in an old house followed, a few blocks from where the wedding was held.

This fantastic trip to Savannah was one that Greg and I will never forget.  It reminds us to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves to us and to keep our loved ones dear.
